Gas Turbine Combined Cycle Power Plants
Though first gas turbine was used to generate electricity, was 4 MW BBC gas turbine installed in 1939 for emergency power in Switzerland (Wikipedia), while the first gas turbine combined cycle power plant was installed in 1968, about fifty years before. It is because the initial gas turbine's exhaust gases temperature was low from which it was not feasible to generate steam to run an efficient steam turbine. As the material technology improved and special metals were developed to withstand the higher flame temperature, it become possible to produce high exhaust gas temperatures. Initial efficiency of CCGT power plant was about 44% which is now increasing above 62%, and gas turbine combined cycle power plants are become most favourable in modern world because of; high efficiency, less turn over time, fuel flexible and reliability.
